Cloudy skies can’t stop Hoboken High graduation

Last week, 162 graduates left the hallways of Hoboken High School and Demarest High School for the long corridor of life. Some will go on to four-year colleges, like salutatorian Steven Barrett, who earned a scholarship to the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.
Others, like Christy Alvarez, Christina Baez, Lucas Ferrer, Robert Foster, David Lugo, and Sage McDonald, have dedicated themselves to service in the Armed Forces.
Many others are furthering their education, either through academic studies or vocational training.
Even on the overcast day, a ray of sunshine peaked out from behind a cloud-filled sky just as class of 2009 valedictorian Stephanie Vallejo mentioned Harvey Weyouche, the school’s popular custodian, who recently passed away.
Vallejo then quoted Ghandi by telling the class to “Be the change you want to see in the world,” and said the next mayor of Hoboken or president of the United States could be sitting among them.
Hoboken High Principal Dr. Lorraine Cella said the graduating class earned over $325,000 in grants, $43,000 in scholarships from local benefactors, and $50,000 in athletic scholarships.
