Seniors invited to boat ride

Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner and the Township Council invite Weehawken seniors to participate in the annual Hudson County Board Ride on Wednesday, July 22. The afternoon includes lunch, music and a ride on the beautiful Hudson River.
The bus departs from Town Hall at 10:30. It should return around 2:30. Seating is limited.
Interested seniors should contact the Senior Department at 201-319-6060 to sign up.

NHRFR passes $54M budget

The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue passed their calendar year 2009 budget two weeks ago at $54.25 million. The regional fire department covers five towns who merged services in 1999.
According to the budget, $48.7 million will be received through contributions from the towns that use the department. North Bergen is allotted to contribute $11,533,094, Union City will give $14,724,344, Weehawken will owe $6,528,018, West New York’s portion will be $11,233,627, and Guttenberg will contribute $2,310,591.
At the last NHRFR meeting, Chairman and Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner attributed the 5 percent budget increase to rising health benefit costs.
Followup calls to Turner about the budget were not returned.

Palisades Medical Center runs raffle

Palisades Medical Center’s Auxiliary will be hosting their Super 50-50 raffle on Aug. 20, to benefit the hospital’s foundation.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling Denise Whitley at (201) 854-5011.
Last year’s winner took home $5,400. The year’s drawing will be held at Frank’s Waterside.

Three swine flu deaths in NJ

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services announced the state’s second and third H1N1-related deaths last week.
A 15-year-old Somerset County boy died at home on Monday, June 8, after having a fever, cough, and congestion as well as vomiting. Other possible contributing medical factors continue to be investigated.
The third case pertains to a 10-year-old boy. According to a release, “The individual was a 10-year old Sussex County boy who died [Wednesday] in Morristown Memorial Hospital. He became ill on June 12, was hospitalized two days later with cough and fever. He had underlying medical conditions. The child was last in school on June 11 and had no symptoms.”
