Dear Editor:
As we recently celebrated Memorial Day, we are reminded of the numerous heroes who perished defending the ideals on which our nation was founded. Accordingly, we are thankful for the men and women who continue to serve our armed forces with gallantry during these critical times.
Furthermore, it is interesting to examine the vital roles that immigrants play in defending our nation. Clearly, the passion of immigrants for our great nation can be measured in their sacrifice on the battlefield.
Immigrants have been an integral component of fighting for our freedoms since the American Revolution and continue to serve with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many New Jerseyans were saddened to read about the loss of Christian Bueno-Galdos, who recently lost his life while serving in Iraq. Sgt. Bueno-Galdos of Peru became a U.S. Citizen in 2005 through his military service. His family elected to have him buried in Totowa, New Jersey, expressing his dedication and affection for the United States.
While the United States has not always touted the service of immigrants with the honor that was deserved, it is evident that earned recognition has become more commonplace.
In closing, I wish to recognize the countless contributions made by immigrant servicemen and women. It is imperative that we remain mindful that our freedoms are protected each and every day by those who choose to make sacrifices for our nation.
Sincerely,
Brian P. Stack
State Senator
