Bedwell ‘Friends’ raise money for Miles for Matheny

The Bedwell Friends, a team of faculty members at the Marion T. Bedwell Elementary School in Bernardsville, set $950 as an online fundraising goal to help support Miles for Matheny, the fundraising and community event being held Sunday, April 19, in downtown Peapack by the Matheny Medical and Educational Center. As of Thursday, April 9, the team had raised $670, or 70 percent of the objective. “I am so proud of the Bedwell teachers, students, parents and community members who are joining us in this worthwhile event,” says Joseph Ciulla, assistant principal. Matheny is a special hospital and educational facility in Peapack for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities. In December and January, students and staff from Matheny visited third grade physical education classes at Bedwell to demonstrate adapted phys ed equipment, which enabled the Bedwell and Matheny students to compete with each other as peers. In June, Matheny students will be participating in Bedwell’s field day. Activities at Miles for Matheny include five cycling courses, a 5K race, a kids fun run and the Lu Huggins Wheelchair Walk in which more than 100 wheelchair participants, with walking partners, travel 1.5 miles around downtown Peapack. These activities are followed by a celebration picnic at Matheny. Every dollar raised will help support the Matheny Center of Medicine and Dentistry, which provides specialized medical, dental and therapy care to Matheny inpatients and people with disabilities in the community. Title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year is sanofi-aventis, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies with U.S. headquarters in Bridgewater.
