Dear Editor:
As a lifelong resident of Jersey City, homeowner, taxpayer, and voter of this great city, I take exception with the positions in which the current Downtown Councilman Steve Fulop has taken
with his vision of how the Jersey City Board of Education should be run.
All of his campaign material has been nothing more than unfounded accusations, totally misleading facts, and a disregard to the integrity of the professionalism of the teachers and administrators who have educated our children over the years. Since the JCBE has assumed control of the day to day operations of running our schools from the State great strides have been made and controls maintained to run our school system with excellence and to bring scores up higher going forward. His opinion to reopen failing schools as charters, magnets, and pilot schools would not make sense since the schools are in better shape then they were years ago and the system is indeed working. His divisive plan would only make matters worse in the long run and the cost us tax payers even more money. With a school system the size of ours it is no easy task, but given the course the system shall prevail and continue to provide a quality education for all our children in the future. By the way all my children have been educated in our local schools and have gone on to productive and rewarding lives.
Further, all his campaign material has consistently referred to him as the “stand alone” or the “only person” which to me refers to a person who has no one else to turn to get things done. I have a problem with this since you serve all the people in your ward you also must work with your fellow members of the Jersey City Council members. This has not been the case for most of his term, it has been alone, I am an island concept. We need representation on the Council which represents all the people of Downtown and work with the rest of the Council members city wide. That is why we need Guy Catrillo to represent all the people from Downtown Ward E not to be divisive and just represent just one point of view. Working collectively we can accomplish much more with Guy as our Downtown Councilman.
