For years, the so-called “reformer” candidates in Hoboken — the ones who claim to want to do away with CityHall secrecy, corruption, and favors for the politically connected — have considered themselves the “good guys.” But in the last year, two warring groups in the movement have lobbied barbs at each other and more recently, put up mayoral candidates against each other.
In the Hoboken mayor’s race, Mayor David Roberts has declined to run for a third term eight years after beating out former Mayor Anthony Russo, who went to jail on bribery charges. The upcoming May 12 election to replace Roberts has six candidates.
Three are current council people: Peter Cammarano, Beth Mason, and Dawn Zimmer. There are also three independents.
Everyone believes him or herself to be a ‘good guy’ and some kind of reformer, but the Masonites and the Zimmerites seem to have drawn the most supporters from that group — except for the fact that for the last year, their supporters have made news by calling each other names on the internet and getting into public scuffles — in fact, one campaign manager told us yesterday that he had filed a police complaint.

Now we heard a rumor that there was a confrontation between two supporters of the women on the west side of town last night, and police were called. No confirmation yet, however, so it may just be a rumor.
