The Past is Ever Present

With everyone looking for bargains these days, who knew that there was one right in your own backyard?

The Great Hoboken Auction
is Saturday, April 25 and it’s just
$10 at the door!

This event is one of the best entertainment values there is — especially with Eugene Flinn of Amanda’s Restaurant as its Master of Ceremonies. This is also an important fundraiser for the Hoboken Historical Museum, so everything you bid on goes a long way to helping the Museum continue its great work.
What will you find at the Auction? While each year is different, here are few donations to think about as we continue to gather lots of special and one-of-a-kind items. Imagine sailing on the Hudson River on a 32’ sloop getting your own close-up view of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan along with three of your friends on board. Prefer to be closer to the water’s edge? Try kayaking with a seasoned guide in his two-man kayak that will have you feeling the waves you probably didn’t even know the Hudson had. Looking for something onshore? Why not celebrate this Memorial Day seated on a Hoboken Fire Truck for the best view in town.
Love art? We have signed etchings, paintings, watercolors, historical prints and much more. Want a renowned artist to paint a portrait of your Hoboken home? We got it. Want a professional photographer to take photos of your children in a fresh, artistic way? Got that, too. Long to see art from the curator’s perspective? Let the American Folk Art Museum’s curator take you on private tour of their remarkable upcoming Kaleidoscope exhibition.
More interested in music than art? No problem. We have excellent tickets to the upcoming U2 360 Tour at Giant’s Stadium. Love Broadway theatre? Then snap up great seats to see “Shrek” and the “Jersey Boys.” Interesting in cooking? Treat yourself and your friends to homemade pastries baked right in your home from Giorgio’s Bakery. A Yankee fan? You’ll find seats just waiting for you. Got a threesome for golf looking for a forth who just happens to be a member of a prestigious Country Club? We have that, too.
What else do we have? What about a private tour of one of Hoboken’s best-kept secrets, the Davidson Laboratory? You can watch history in the making by seeing how the 1944 warship, the Vandenberg, will be sunk on May 15 to become an artificial reef in Key West. You’ll see what it will take to sink this warship properly by viewing a scale model of it in the giant Wave Tanks that have been used to test the designs of winning America’s Cup racing yachts, U.S. Navy ships, and even the buoyancy of NASA’s Apollo flotation balloons. There are literally hundreds of unique items all waiting for your bid.

In years past, we’ve held the event under a large tent in the Shipyard Park. This year, we’re taking our festive auction inside in what many still think of as the “old Hollywood Video” store at 1203 Shipyard Lane/1202 Hudson St. A special thanks to Michael Barry of Applied Companies for donating this space, as well as many other items.
The doors open at 5:30 pm, so you have time to see both the silent and live auction items. The live auction will start at 7:30 pm and if you’ve never seen Eugene Flinn in action then you’re in for a real treat.
You’ll also enjoy great food, drinks and music for a fun, social event that you’ll be talking about long after it’s over. So mark your calendar and check out the website. You’ll not only have a great time, you’ll be donating to a great cause — the Hoboken Historical Museum, an important institution that needs your support in order to continue its educational and cultural programs. We also want to thank all the local businesses and individuals who have made donations to this event, as we couldn’t do it without your gracious generosity.
Children are welcome and attend free. For questions about the event, just stop by the Museum or leave a message at 201.656.2240, option 6.

Museum: 1301 Hudson St.; open noon to 5 pm weekends, 2 to 7 pm Tues. through Thurs., and 1 to 5 pm Fridays; www.hobokenmuseum.org.
