Hoboken Mayor David Roberts scheduled a press conference today saying that the city miscalculated the tax increase for the current fiscal year. Roberts said Monday that the overall property tax increase (including city, school and county taxes) wasn’t 47 percent, but rather 23. The city portion alone, he said, increased by 60 percent, not 84 percent.
The large increase in Hoboken spurred numerous protests from taxpayers who noticed a sudden rise in their bill.
The tax increase, whether 47 or 23 percent, came about because the city’s state-appointed fiscal monitor increased the budget to $121 million this year in order to close a recurring city budget gap and make up for deferred spending.
Roberts said the County Tax Administrator and other officials have signed off on the recalculation. The press conference was held at 11:30 in City Hall.
