Hoboken school budget likely to include tax cut, layoffs

The Hoboken Board of Education will meet Tuesday night to introduce their budget at 7 p.m. at the Wallace School auditorium.
Although district officials are still pounding away at the numbers, Superintendent Jack Raslowsky said he expects to report a 1.8 percent reduction in the tax rate tomorrow night, with a high probability for cutting employees.
“There will be a personnel reduction across the board,” Raslowsky said. He noted that he cannot discuss yet specific positions that will be targeted because those employees have not yet been given notice.
Raslowsky said he will give the crowd more explanation than he was able to supply at last year’s budget introduction.
Last year, the district reduced administrative positions and cut several teachers during the budget process. However, the elimination of teachers was softened when some were rehired to fill other positions. Very little of the roughly $900,000 that was saved for programs through the staff reduction was actually spent on programs.
