Erin go brouhaha
At 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, patrolmen on special detail for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade were stopped at First and Hudson streets by pedestrians who claimed they had just been attacked, police said. The group told police their friend was lying unconscious outside 94 Hudson St.
Officers found the victim unresponsive, bleeding from the nose, with swelling and contusions of his eye and cheek.
Volunteer Emergency Medical Services treated the man on the scene and transported him to Hoboken University Medical Center.
Witnesses and two other victims told police that their group was walking on Hudson Street toward Newark Avenue when they passed a man and a woman having an argument. As the group walked past, they told police the man said to them, “What the [expletive] are you looking at?”
According to their account, the man in the argument allegedly punched one of the passers-by in the head, then allegedly punched the victim, who fell unconscious to the ground, and allegedly punched a third man from the group in the back of the head.
Victims and witnesses identified a man still at the scene as the alleged attacker, according to Police Captain Anthony Falco. Police arrested Daniel T. Hickey, 28, Elmwood Park, for one count of aggravated assault and two counts of simple assault.
Seven warrants, seven towns
Patrolmen were dispatched to the CVS drug store at Washington Street and Newark Avenue on Monday, March 9, to investigate a shoplifting incident at 3:38 p.m. After an employee who witnessed the event gave a description of the suspect, the officers took a man walking toward the PATH station into custody, police said.
At headquarters, the CVS employee identified the suspect. A search of the man allegedly turned up eight bottles of body wash valued at $57.92.
Police charged James Kyles, Asbury Park, with shoplifting. They also said he had warrants for his arrest from seven other municipalities, according to Police Captain Anthony Falco.
Warrants for Kyles had been issued in Asbury Park, Perth Amboy, Highland Park, Harrison, Neptune, Red Bank, and New Brunswick, Falco said. The warrants did not specify the original charges – they were issued after a failure to appear in court – so police could not say what the other charges against Kyles were.
Trash cans ablaze on Sinatra Drive
Police on patrol on the 500 block of Sinatra Drive at 3:12 a.m. on March 8 noticed a trash can on fire and spotted a man kneeling next to another trash can, allegedly trying to light it on fire, police said.
When they approached the man, he allegedly took off running north along Sinatra Drive, Police Captain Anthony Falco said.
The officers chased the suspect on foot and apprehended him allegedly trying to crawl between two parked cars.
The Hoboken Fire Department extinguished two garbage cans that were ablaze.
Police charged Kevin Brevard, Jr. 23, of Elizabeth, with criminal mischief and obstruction.
