Dear Editor:
I was first elected to the Board of Education in 2000, re-elected in 2003 and 2006. I have been the President of the Board of Education since 2002.
As a former educator who taught social studies at Lincoln High School, I have committed myself to public education. I would be honored to have the opportunity to be involved in the decision making process for our district for the next three years.
It was during my tenure that the Board instituted its policy of having open public committee meetings which are televised and can be viewed on the local public access channel.
The New Jersey State CUSAC Process reviewed the district in five areas. We have gained local control in Governance, Finance and Operations. Only Personnel and Educational Programs are not under local control. If re-elected, I will make it my priority to return all five areas to local control.
Much has been accomplished over the past few years in Facilities. We continue to work with the state to build new schools and fortify those in need.
Our High School Initiative, instituted in September of 2008, is an ambitious plan to improve our secondary schools. I would continue to monitor its success and evoke changes if necessary.
I take great pride in the fact that I am able to work with the Superintendent, Board members, administrators, school staff, parents, community groups and both instructional and non-instructional personnel.
Education is the key to success. I would urge the public to become more involved in our public schools, In order to achieve progress, it is clear to me that partnership between the public and the school district is essential. In nine years, I have never missed a monthly Board of Education meeting, and although I have a wonderful family and I am blessed with six grandchildren, I will find the time to represent you on the Board of Education.
