Tripodi warns against electioneering

Fiscal Monitor Judy Tripodi sent a memo to the City Council on Friday, warning about sending campaign messages to municipal employees via city e-mail.

“It has come to my attention that at least one member of the Hoboken City Council has been transmitting political e-mails, wholly unrelated to official business, to employees of the City of Hoboken via their City e-mail accounts.

Please be advised that such use of the City’s e-mail system is improper and unacceptable under City policy, just as if you were politicking within City Hall itself. If you are responsible for such activity, immediately cease sending political messages to all such e-mail addresses ending in ‘hobokennj.org.’

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.”

Sources at City Hall said Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer was the culprit, an allegation Zimmer confirmed on Friday.

She said at least one city e-mail address was found on her distribution list, and more may have been used.

“If it happened, it was done by accident,” she said. “I do understand that it’s inappropriate.”

She said people in her campaign were sorting through e-mail lists to remove any city e-mail addresses.
