To the Editor:
On Sunday, Feb. 15, Foley’s Tavern held its annual NASCAR Party in memory of our dear, departed friend Frankie “Papa” Fetch. The party is one of many annual events that the local tavern runs, and is always held on the day of the Daytona 500, known widely as the biggest day of the year to racing enthusiasts.
Papa, a beloved member of the Foley’s Tavern family, lost his battle with cancer several years ago, and the event is now held each year in his honor and memory.
Papa had lobbied with me for years to have this day at the bar. Not being a racing fan, I was reluctant to the idea. But he wore me down and finally convinced me that this would be a good thing. It now turns out to be one of the best days of the year. At Foley’s, it’s bigger than the Super Bowl.
The party features free food, reduced price drinks, giveaways, raffles, and a lot of laughs. Also, as is the case with many of the tavern’s events, money is raised for a local charity. The proceeds from this year’s event, approximately $500 are earmarked for I Believe in HFA, the group responsible for saving and keeping open Holy Family Academy. Each year, we try to find the group that is most needy, deserving and that Papa would have appreciated. I can’t think of a better place to send your charitable donations than to HFA.
My father, sister, and wife all count themselves among the HFA alumni, and it speaks to the quality of your society when you can save an institution such as this. Businesses, large and small, as well as private citizens should remember no matter what your donation, every little bit helps.
