Downtown Jersey City Councilman Steven Fulop announced on Friday, in a letter sent out to supports and the media, that the kickoff for his reelection campaign is on Mar. 5.
The event will be held at the Barrow Street Bar (not another bar, Steve!), 15 Barrow St. in Jersey City from 6 – 8 p.m. The cost is $25, which gets supporters free beer and appetizers.
Fulop, turning 32 on Feb. 28, is running as an independent again, just as he did in 2005 when he won his first term in office in an upset win over incumbent E. Junior Maldonado.
There was much speculation that Fulop would run on the slate of mayoral candidate Louis Manzo or even incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy. And there was even rumors of Fulop running for mayor instead of city council.
Fulop is known for pushing for the passage of legislation to limit political donations from contractors doing business with Jersey City, and for being a persistent critic of Mayor Jerramiah Healy.
Fulop is running against several opponents including Guy Catrillo (running with Healy), Antonio Tony Torres, former City Councilman Jaime Vazquez and Fulop’s friend Joshua Levitt.
The municipal election is on May 12. – Ricardo Kaulessar
