Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani announced his endorsement of New Jersey gubernatorial candidate and former U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie Tuesday afternoon in Hoboken, a few blocks from the Maxwell Place development, where Christie’s intended opponent, Gov. Jon Corzine, moved a month ago.
Giuliani and Christie stood in front of campaign supporters and members of the press in Maxwell Place Park, overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
When asked, Giuliani said he didn’t know Corzine lived in Maxwell Place, but that he was sure “the governor will t ake it in the right spirit.”
Christie has a history of prosecuting highly-visible elected officials. However, some have complained that in one case, he let a government witness off the hook even though she had more egregious violations (see previous story).
Giuliani, a former U.S. Attorney himself, said Christie’s background will enable him to deal with a variety of crisis situations, from the economic issues we are experiencing now to terrorism.
Christie said the state would do better if there was more “truth-telling” by the governor about the financial situation, something he said he could correct in office.
He said raising state taxes “over a hundred times in seven years” was no help to struggling families. — TJC
