On Wednesday’s Hoboken council agenda: Cutting own salaries AND benefits, and more…

After several Hoboken council members competed last month to put resolutions on the agenda to cut their own salaries and the salary of the mayor by either 10 or 15 percent, they compromised on two ordinances that will be up for a final vote Wednesday night to cut council and mayoral salaries by 10 percent.
However, that doesn’t mean that they are going to let the issue end there.
Councilwoman (and mayoral candidate) Dawn Zimmer and her ally, Councilman Peter Cunningham, have added an ordinance to the agenda for introduction, asking the council members to “contribute a portion of their salary toward their health insurance benefits.” That matter will go to a first vote Wednesday and a final vote at a future meeting.
And council members Theresa Castellano and Michael Russo put a resolution on the agenda calling for the council to pledge 10 percent of its salary to a “Hoboken-based charitable and service program.” (Is that besides the 10 percent they’re cutting?)
Also on the agenda: Revised rules for conducting council meetings, sponsored by Theresa Castellano. The 5-minute maximum for public speakers speaking on one issue is included (see the link below to read the entire resolution).
Also on the agenda is an ordiannce to establish a Department of Revenue and Finance, and a communication from Mayor David Roberts to City Council President Nino Giacchi regarding “Chicago parking meters” (okaaaay) and regarding “support for the Western Edge Redevelopment Plan.”
Councilwoman Beth Mason also has a resolution on the agenda authorizing the Planning Board to investigate the roughly 20-block area in need of redevelopment near the 14th Street Viaduct, and provide recommendations to the City Council.
