Lady Indians win their first game

Weehawken’s 7th and 8th grade Girls Basketball team kicked off their inaugural season in the Hudson County Basketball League with an 18-16 win over St. Nicks of Jersey City. The game couldn’t have started out more perfectly for the Lady Indians, with Natalie Primero tapping the opening tip-off to Deya Arroyo, who quickly passed to Valentina Ospina for easy layup within the first three seconds of the game.
The Indians carried that momentum to take a 12 to 4 lead at half time behind three baskets by Nairobi Mesa, one more by Ospina and a 16 ft. jump shot by Monica Fernandez. In the third quarter, the Lady Indians maintained their lead with aggressive defense and scoring from Emily Verdon, Primero and Mesa, who finished with a team-high eight points. St Nicks rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring six unanswered points, bringing the score to 18-16 with just 12 seconds left. But the Lady Indians were able to maintain possession of the ball as time ran out to gain their first win. Next opponent for the Lady Indians will be the Stevens “Shockers” of Hoboken.
