The Jersey City cop who allegedly ran down a couple walking near Battery Park in New York City Saturday morning admitted his act in a criminal complaint, according to police.
Police said Martin Abreu, 25, was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry when he allegedly hit Marilyn Feng, 26, and Dennis Loffredo, 26, at approximately 3:40 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of Albany Street and the West Side Highway. He was charged formally in New York City Criminal Court on Sunday.
The criminal complaint against Jersey City Police Officer Martin Abreu, provided by the New York City District Attorney’s Office on Monday, shows Abreu admitted he struck Feng.
In the complaint, he was charged formally with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of aggravated vehicular assault, two counts of vehicular manslaughter in the second degree, vehicular assault in the second degree, and separate counts of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Also according to the complaint, when police arrived at the scene of the incident, they found Feng “laying on the West Side Highway” and were told by EMS technicians that Loffredo’s leg was “shattered.” In the complaint, it states the police detected alcohol on Abreu’s breath and a “bottle of liquor” in the car. A blood alcohol test given to Abreu found his blood alcohol level was .124, 1.5 times over the legal limit under New York law, according to the complaint.
If Abreu is found guilty on the two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide alone, New York law stipulates he could face the maximum of 50 years in jail. – Ricardo Kaulessar
