AREY, ROBERT A. Services for Robert A. Arey, 80, were held Oct. 25 at Greenville Memorial Home, Jersey City. Arey, a Jersey City resident and professor emeritus of English at New Jersey City University, died Oct. 15 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center in New York. Arey was president of Local 1839 of the American Federation of Teachers from 1969 to 1972 and 1998 to 2002 when he became the chief negotiator for the union until this year. An Army veteran of World War II stationed in Italy, Arey was a Maine native, who held degrees from both the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia University. He began teaching college English in 1957, becoming a full-time faculty member at NJCU (then Jersey City State College) in 1967, and retiring in 1996. Arey was teaching a course as an adjunct this semester. A former chairman of the NJCU English department, Arey was named professor emeritus in 1998. Arey also served as president of the Council of New Jersey State College Locals from 1970 to 1972 and in 1986 was elected the first male president of the Hudson County chapter of the National Organization for Women. He and his wife, Christine Carmody-Arey, director of NJCU’s Open Writing Lab, were honored by New Jersey NOW as a “Couple of Courage” in 1986.
