MERDO, ALBERT M. Mass for Albert M. Merdo Sr., 87, of Jersey City, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, was held Oct. 3 at St. Aedan’s Church, Jersey City. He died Sept. 29 at Christ Hospital, Jersey City. Born in Hendersonville, Pa., he lived for several years of his childhood in Czechoslovakia before his family moved to Jersey City. Merdo was an Army veteran, and was a guard at the front gate at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked the 41st Coastal Unit Battery A. He received a New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal in 2001, and in 2007 received a Distinguished Service Medal given by the Jersey City Veterans Association. After World War II, he owned three taverns in Hudson County, one of which was the famed Woodshed Tavern in Union City, known for its undefeated basketball seasons with such players. “He was a very kind man, kind hearted and he would do anything for anybody. Everybody knew him,” said his son Albert Jr. Merdo was a member of Post 70 of the American Legion, Nutley. Merdo was a longtime communicant of St. Aedan’s Church. Survivors include a daughter, Diane McGackin, and her husband Danny; a son, Albert Jr., and wife Debbie; and two grandchildren, Danielle and Albert III.
