Saving Open Space”

You have a photo of “an unidentified Jersey City park, c. 1973.” Just to let you know, it’s Van Vorst.

HERB HECKMAN

The photo on page 36 of your Spring & Summer 2008 issue caught my eye because riding the bike is one of my brothers, either William or Charles, and I am on the back of the bike. At first, I thought the park was Boyd McGuiness Park, or as we know it the triangle at Duncan Avenue and the Boulevard. Back in the ’70s before the Boyd McGuiness complex was built, there used to be a gas station where we would go and get air for our bicycles (we grew up on Highland Avenue and a family friend lived on Duncan Avenue). I scanned the picture and sent it to my brothers for verification and drove by the park to see if I could match up the brownstones. It’s, in fact, Van Vorst Park, which threw me because we were not allowed past certain boundaries and were rarely downtown. I spoke to my mother and brothers about going downtown-it must have been a special trip.

Kudos

I recently moved to the Paulus Hook section of Jersey City and was fortunate to receive your latest issue of Jersey City Magazine. The magazine is wonderful, very informative.

“The Renovator”

I enjoyed the article in your last issue about Stacey Kalins and her renovation work. I was just amazed at Stacey’s talent and dedication. As a real estate broker and investor, I can really appreciate what she has accomplished. We could learn a great deal from her.

MICHAEL J. BERNEY

Both my brothers, Joe and Mario, played football at Dickinson High School and Ferris High School, and they always spoke about the football greats who were mentioned in the article, “Moments of Gridiron Greatness.” (Fall & Winter 07-08). They are senior citizens now, but they played locally and if it wasn’t for them always speaking about these football players, I wouldn’t have recognized their names or known anything about the sport. I am 75 years old and this article was nostalgic to my younger years, having been born and raised in Jersey City-a city I am very proud to be part of. My brothers would’ve gotten a kick out of this article and I was very lucky to have found this magazine sitting in the doctor’s office. Jersey City Magazine is a wonderful magazine and I appreciate all that is put into it.
