PAYTON, GORDON P. Services for Gordon P. Payton, 73, of Jersey City, were held Sept. 9 at Calvary CME Church, Jersey City. He died at home Sept. 4. He was born, raised and educated in Jersey City. After serving in the Air Force from 1952 to 1966, Payton began his career as a hair stylist at Rosalie’s Hair Salon in the late 1960s. He opened Payton’s Palace Hair Salon in Jersey City in the 1970s and Creative Source Hair Salon, in Jersey City and East Orange, in the 1980s. He participated in the Miss Black America Teenage Pageant, received an award from the Independent Hair Show and was named a Hair Stylist of the Year by the Modern Beautician Association. He was a member of Calvary CME Church and served on the Usher Board. Survivors include a daughter, Michele; a sister, Lorraine; a brother, Raymond; four grandchildren, Chiké, Latrice, Ramon, and Lattuma; two sisters-in-law, Vera and Joan; nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and two friends, John and Elizabeth.
