No right turn on red At meetings, WNY takes aim at graffiti; UC installs more ‘No turn on red’ signs

In both West New York and Union City last week, commissioners’ meetings broached issues including graffiti and banning right turns on red.

The Union City Board of Commissioners held their most recent meeting Nov. 20 at Town Hall, during which they adopted an ordinance to add to the list of corners on which motorists cannot make right turns on red.

Signs will be placed at the following intersections:

* 14th Street and Central Avenue going northbound and eastbound;
* 40th Street and New York Avenue headed northbound;
* 38th Street and Hudson Street also heading northbound;
* 37th and 39th streets heading westbound from Kennedy Blvd.

Also at the meeting, the commissioners tabled a person-to-person liquor license transfer from Piramide Entertainment LLC (limited liability company) to a Mr. Eddie Fernandez, pending a city lawyer’s review.

Another resolution was passed for repairs and replacement of new sidewalks between 45th and 47th streets at Cottage Place.

Also at the meeting, the commissioners created a “Shade Tree Committee” that will be appointed by the Board of Commissioners. The five-member committee will include the director of the Department of Public Works. The committee’s function will be to advise the Board of Commissioners regarding the planting, maintenance, and/or removal of shrubbery and trees on public property such as plazas and parks.

Residents can attend the next meeting on Dec. 4 at City Hall at 7 p.m.

West New York meeting

The town of West New York held their monthly commissioners’ meeting this past Monday at 7 p.m.

The Nov. 19 meeting was held at City Hall. The commissioners and the mayor adopted six ordinances and 15 resolutions.

One was a resolution titled “Litter Clean Up Phase I and Graffiti Truck Project.”

The town received approximately $346,000 in grants to purchase a graffiti-fighting truck, employ five workers to clean the sidewalks in the town’s business district, and install 50 wastebaskets, and buy three sidewalk-sweeping machines.

Approximately 9 percent of the funds are coming from the town, while the majority is coming from Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) funds. A UEZ is a business district where vendors can collect sales tax at 3.5 percent instead of 7, and some of that money is used to upgrade the zone.

West New York’s Urban Enterprise Zone covers various areas of Bergenline Avenue (see sidebar).

Officials expect the project to begin shortly after the new year.

The commissioners also adopted a resolution moving a bus stop from 61st Street 105 feet north of its original location, pending approval by the Commissioner of Transportation.

Also, handicapped spaces at several West New York locations are being removed due to deceased or relocated citizens. Those locations are: 6035 Tyler Place, 5005 Hudson Ave., 58 67th St., and 5101 Park Ave. Next month’s meeting will be held on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
