$4,000 donated to town

A t the Secaucus town meeting on Tuesday, four checks for $1,000 each were issued to various groups in the town.

The money came from the Shree Swamirayan Temple, which had just celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its religion, a form of Hinduism, last month.

“Since [the Temple] has been here, they’ve always wanted to show how they feel toward the town,” said Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell.

One check went toward the Dennis Elwell Foundation, which will use the money for scholarships. Another went to the library for use in completing its reading garden. The chief of police, Dennis Corcoran, will use one of the checks to purchase a laptop computer for next year’s senior class valedictorian through the police’s scholarship fund. The last check went to the Secaucus Volunteer Fire Department and will be placed in a mutual fund for members and the families of the Fire Department.

AARP driving course

T he Liberty Health Meadowlands Hospital, via a partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), will offer residents of both New York and New Jersey a “Driver Safety Program.”

The course, which will include classroom instruction on defensive driving and other techniques, has the potential to both reduce points on your license, with the approval of NJ Motor Vehicles, and could also earn a participant a rebate from their auto insurance company.

Although AARP is sponsoring the program, participants do not need to be members of the group to take part in the course.

The next course will take place on Sept. 17 and Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center, 55 Meadowlands Parkway, Secaucus. There is a $10 fee for per person and attendance is required both days for any of the benefits to be valid. For more information on the courses, call 201-392-3266.
