Does something terrible have to happen in order to have seatbelts installed in Union City taxis?

Dear Editor:

I sometimes have to take a taxi in Union City. I am very concerned that almost none of the taxis seem to have operating passenger seatbelts. This is very dangerous, and I believe against the law. Families without cars sometimes have to take taxis and without seatbelts, people’s lives, including children’s, are being unnecessarily jeopardized on a daily basis.

I am writing this anonymously because I worry that they will not pick me up if I sign my name. But public and law enforcement pressure should be applied so these taxi companies follow the laws affecting public safety. In my experience, almost all taxis and taxi companies operating in Union City are guilty of inoperable seatbelts.

It would be a terrible tragedy if someone was unnecessarily killed or injured due to the lack of working seat belts.
