‘Faces in Grace’ Interviews with community resulted in art exhibit; reception Oct. 19

“Faces in Grace” will present to the public, through portraiture, the various people and communities that intersect at Grace Church Van Vorst, a microcosm of God’s Kingdom in Jersey City.

Featuring over 40 prominent local artists, almost all of the artwork in the exhibit is new and was created for the exhibition.

Artists and portrait subjects met in open portrait sessions held at the church in August or in private sessions other times. Subjects were invited from Grace’s many community outreach programs including Breakfast for the Hungry, Grace Senior Center for Healthy Living, recovery programs, and from Grace’s congregation.

Works include photography, painting, drawing, collage, quilting, video, and sculpture. An oral history project accompanies the exhibit involving interviews with various subjects and artists.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will be open during Jersey City Artists Studio Tour 2006 on Oct. 21 and 22 from noon to 6 p.m.

Additional gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Faces in Grace” was curated by The Rev. Janet Broderick, Donald Gallagher, Garth Kobal, and Christine Moss-Higuita. The exhibit runs from Oct. 15 through Nov. 3.
