Youth performance group to hold benefit gala

T he Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc., a not-for-profit youth-based organization dedicated to providing free classes in the performing arts to children from all over Hudson County, will be holding their Spring Benefit Gala on Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in Schuetzen Park, located at Kennedy Boulevard and 32nd Street in North Bergen.
Live entertainment will be provided by musical group Nicole & Ray, vocalist Stuart Marshall, vocalist Roxanna Sarmiento, the high-energy group The TapOleDance Company, and others.
There will be guest speakers, and dinner and dancing. The organization will also present scholarship awards to two graduating high school students.
Now into its sixth year, The Grace Theatre provides free classes in ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, folkloric dance, salsa, flamenco, singing, and acting to children from Hudson County, as well as free tickets to professional performances to the students and their families.

Child advocates call for volunteers

H udson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is currently recruiting volunteers from all municipalities in the county to represent foster children in the court system.
An information session will be held on Tuesday, April 11 to explain the program and its need for volunteers. The session will occur at 6 p.m. in Room 202 of the Hudson County Administration Building at 595 Newark Ave. in Jersey City.
Also, Gov. Jon S. Corzine has proclaimed Friday, April 7 as CASA Child Advocate Day to recognize the unique services and contributions provided by CASA programs.
CASA’s volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for the judges, and safeguard the interests of the children while they are in the foster care system.

Networking group to hold event

T he Gold Coast Business Link, a networking group working to create opportunities for personal and professional development on the Gold Coast, will hold a wine and cheese tasting at Riverside Wine Merchants, located at 9001 River Road in North Bergen, on Wednesday, April 26.
The event will feature food and drinks, and networking opportunities. Admission is free, and there is a cash bar.

West Indian American Carnival calls for volunteers

T he Jersey City West Indian American Carnival Association calls on all bandleaders, designers, and others interested in participating in this year’s Jersey City Carnival Parade. On Wednesday, April 5, the carnival association will host a special meeting at which all interested parties will be able to hear the new plans for “Carnival 2006” and receive updated band information.
The registration deadline for this year’s carnival is June 30. The bandleaders’ meeting will take place on April 5 on the second floor Caucus Room of Jersey City’s City Hall. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
