Congratulations to the Hoboken Redwings on winning their first North 2, Group 1 victory

Dear Editor:

As Mayor of the City of Hoboken, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to our High School football team, the Hoboken Redwings, on their undefeated season that was capped off last week with their first North 2, Group 1 title victory at Giants Stadium. Athletics, especially football, has long been a tradition in our community. Team sports build character and our football program has a long and storied tradition throughout New Jersey for its winning record and numerous state titles.

Again, the Red Wings have proven they can get the job done. Their undefeated record belies the fact that these young people were able to join as a unit to accomplish a common goal. Not only did this bring pride to our City, but also it is another example of the power of public education.

In over four years as Mayor, I have advocated our schools and their role in shaping future generations. We have taken a creative approach in meeting educational and social challenges. Team sports, along with other group-oriented activities, are important in meeting the challenges of the “real world” long after the formal educational processes have ended.

The Red Wings are the champions, further reinforcing our status as a City of many firsts. This is only fitting as we conclude our 150th year celebration. I offer my best to the outstanding Red Wings players, Coach Lou Taglieri and his staff and especially every student and staff member at Hoboken High School for making our community proud and once again establishing the Mile Square City as a force to be reckoned with. Let’s continue to raise the bar!

Mayor David Roberts
