Roberts leads Team USA in world basketball tournaments

There is a talented group of college players who have been assembled to represent the United States in this week’s FIBA Young Men (under 21) World Championships in Argentina.

One of the players on the team is former St. Anthony standout Terrence Roberts, who currently plays at Syracuse University. Roberts was selected by Team USA head coach Phil Martelli, who will coach Roberts’ former teammates Dwayne Lee and Ahmad Nivins this year at St. Joseph’s University.

The 2005 FIBA Men’s U21 World Championship will be held Aug. 5-14 in Cordoba and Mar del Plata, Argentina. It will consist of 12 national teams split into two groups for preliminary round-robin play.

The top four teams in each group will advance to the medal quarterfinals, while the fifth and sixth place finishing teams in each group will compete for ninth through 12th place.

Roberts, who has been getting a good amount of playing time and is averaging 10 points and eight rebounds in international play, will lead Team USA against China this weekend.

The United States is then slated to face Lithuania, Puerto Rico, Nigeria and Slovenia, before entering the medal rounds Aug. 12. The championship round will take place Aug. 14.

Some of other notable players on the team with Roberts are Duke All-American guard J.J. Redick, Kentucky guard Rajon Rondo, Charlotte forward Curtis Withers and Marcus Williams from the University of Connecticut.

In any case, it’s a great honor for Roberts to be representing his country at such an early age…

We’re hearing rumors about an overthrow, a coup d’ etat of sorts involving the North Bergen Bandits girls’ softball program, one that has caused a lot of heartache and despair from coaches, players, organizers and what have you.

It’s unbelievable the garbage that goes on with these youth and recreation teams, when power-hungry people go wild, losing sight of what is supposed to be taking place, which is kids playing organized sports.

If this is the truth and there was a complete overthrow, then people in North Bergen have some explaining to do….

The West New York Junior American Legion team heads to its state tournament this weekend. We’ll have more in next week’s editions of Extra Innings, but once again, here’s another West New York youth baseball team that does things the right way and gives its kids a chance to play top-flight organized baseball through the summer months. And there’s nothing wrong with that…

Here’s a get-well wish to long-time friend and sometime Hudson Reporter photographic contributor Tommy Suszka, who hasn’t been having a good time of it lately. Suszka is a great photographer whose work has been featured in this section many times over the last decade, never once asking for anything other than a credit line next to his pictures. His work at the St. Anthony Tournament of Champions game at the Meadowlands in 2004 was nothing short of spectacular and enhanced this section immensely time and time again.

He’s a dedicated photographer and more importantly, he’s a devoted husband and father who deserves a better fate than what he’s been going through lately.

Please keep Tommy Suszka in your thoughts and prayers…
