Movie coverage nets journalism accolades Community News wins photo and editorial awards

Coverage of Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds as well as hard news and science reporting as resulted in top awards from the Garden State Journalistist Association.

The Community News also won one of the three most coveted prizes in obtaining Photo of the Year credit as well as a first place award for other photos.

The Bayonne Community News, one of the newspapers operated by Hudson Reporter Newsgroup received top honors in photo and print journalism at the 58th Annual Memorial Journalism awards hosted by the Garden State Journalist Association on June 17.

The Community News received one of the organization’s top three awards, Photo of the Year, for an entry called “Worn on the 4th of July.” First place was also awarded for portrait and personality photography. Both photos were taken by Al Sullivan.

Sullivan also received first place in spot news reporting for a story that followed the car chase of John Dobrowolski, and another first place award in Science, Health and Medicine reporting for a story dealing with a woman seeking a lung transplant. War of the World movie coverage received a third place award in series reporting.

Photo judging was done by the Harford Courant and editorial judging by The Record Journal, both of Connecticut.

This is the second significant series of honors awarded to the Hudson Reporter staff this year. In March, the New Jersey Press Association named Tom Jennemann, who covers Hoboken for the Hudson Reporter newsgroup, was named Weekly Journalist of the Year, the highest honor for a weekly awarded in the state.

Also winning NJPA awards were sportswriter Jim Hague, graphic artists Jennifer Merrick and Susan Grzybowski, and saleswoman Marybeth Ponik also won awards for their work.
