Dear Editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who volunteered on Thanksgiving Day at East LA and other establishments that opened their doors to feed the homeless and those in need of a hot meal. There was a tremendous outpouring of compassion which speaks volumes about the character of our community.
It is important that this spirit continues, and as we enter a new holiday season, now is the time to help those less fortunate. The Hoboken Homeless Shelter, under the direction of Sr. Norberta Hunnewinkle, is recognized as a safe and secure facility which serves the needs of local residents in need of a meal or a warm place to sleep.
I urge all residents to support the shelter through volunteerism or financial support. These efforts improve the spirits and lives of countless community residents in a time of dire need. I especially want to thank those who have supported the shelter over the past year, from the Fontana family which made a generous donation, to the Black Bear restaurant which will hold a fundraiser later this month.
Working together, we can make a difference in enriching the lives of others and our community as a whole. This was evident on Thanksgiving and hopefully will continue throughout the new year.
