Dear Editor:
Just when Hoboken residents are trying to save Pier A from the overblown designs competing for selection as a 9/11 memorial, we read in the newspapers (June 5 Jersey Journal and June 6 Hoboken Reporter) of a sizeable World War II memorial headed for our waterfront. Granted this latest design strikes me as more moving and impressive than the 9/11 entries. And certainly the dead of World War II deserve their share of tribute. But why must every architect of such a project presume to put it up between the viewers and our river view?
Ron Hine (as quoted in the Journal write up) was correct in pointing out that the depicted placement would violate state regulations by coming between the river and the public waterfront walkway we’ve been working decades to complete.
I urge you to insist that the promoters find another spot for this memorial where it would be visible but not obtrusive.
