Woman’s Club of Weehawken earns several awards Talented charitable group receives recognition for arts and crafts

The Woman’s Club of Weehawken has been recognized for its charitable work and conservation and ecological efforts, but now you can add artistic and talented to the group’s impressive ledger of success.

Several members of the Woman’s Club of Weehawken won awards at the 110th annual convention of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs at the Atlantic City Hilton last month.

The club itself earned first place in the state for its work in conservation and second place in promoting legislation.

As individuals, the club members won several awards in the Arts/Creative competition.

Local artist Carol Kravitz won three gold ribbons for her paintings. Kravitz, whose work has been shown in local shows and galleries, won in the professional category.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to get any kind of award, but it’s even more special to receive awards from the Women’s Club, which is such a great organization,” Kravitz said. “The club does so much charitable work and conservation work, which are two things I feel very strongly about.”

Mary Aulde won a gold ribbon for earrings that she made. She also won in the professional category. Sarah Crew received the Gold Grand Award for her painting on a box and she received second place for a necklace she made.

Ruth Elsasser and Sandy Weigel both won awards in photography, while Marie Alberian won a blue ribbon in the flower show category, while Edna Whitton won second place.

“It just seems that we have quite a few talented people in our club,” said Elsasser, a long-time member and past president. “We always have a good group of women who enter. Fortunately, this year, we made a good showing and won some awards. I certainly was surprised when I heard that I won. For a small group, we really did well.”

Elsasser also was named to the state’s Honor Roll, recognizing her exceptional leadership for the eight years she served as president. Fran Jones was placed in the state’s Order of the Lily, which honored Jones for her 60 years of exemplary service to the Woman’s Club of Weehawken.

At the convention, it was announced that the 14,000 members of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs had volunteered almost 1.6 million hours of charity work and raised more than $5 million in cash or in-kind services over the past year. The monies raised went to Canine Companions, an organization that enhances the lives of children and adults with disabilities other than blindness, by providing them with highly trained assistance dogs.

“We’re such a small group, but we have so many talented women,” Kravitz said. “We hope that other women would join us and increase our membership.”
