Do we really ‘need’ any more memorials to 9/11?

Dear Editor:

What can we do to stop the 9/11 Memorial Project from happening? These bizarre structures have nothing to do with our feelings after the tragedy of 9/11. They don’t represent anything except the outsized egos of the artists. Can any of these monstrosities evoke more feelings that Hoboken’s spontaneous 9/11 Memorial – the photos taped to the kiosk in the Park? The second 9/11 Memorial, the Teardrop, is more hearttfelt than the proposed jungle gym or the jumbo eggbeater. For taking up precious space in the park, the third 9/11 Memorial, the ginko grove and the mess of ugly bushes, can’t be beat. The designs for our fourth 9/11 Memorial are beyond ridiculous. One saving grace is that it’s not possible for any monument to be uglier than Jersey City’s.

Let’s rethink this in a more compassionate, human scale. How many more memorials need to be constructed to show our sorrow? Have some consideration for the residents of Hoboken who use the Park!
