Dear Editor:
Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham of Jersey City and NJ State Senator in the 31st Legislative died of a massive heart attack Tuesday, May 25. As a marine veteran, he was a soldier and as the saying goes, “All soldiers never die, they just fade away.”Yes, Mayor Cunningham might have died but his memory and his legacy live on. His death was untimely, but God has taken him away because he had done his mission. He accomplished what he needed to do. He was able to break the barrier of race in JC. He became the first African American mayor and united all the people. He was mayor for African Americans, Hispanics, Caucasians, Asian Americans and Middle Easterners. He was sincere in being the mayor of all the people of Jersey City because that was his mission that God has given him.
The Philippine American community in Jersey City is ever so grateful for his many legacies to our community, his initiative to improve the Plaza Rizal (in cooperation with the City Council and DPW) and upon the request of the Order of the Knights of Rizal and the Ladies For Rizal, NJ Chapter, his appointments of Philippine Americans as City Judge, Director of Finance, Tax Assessor and the various commissioners.
Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to his loving wife, Sandra Bolden Cunningham and to his family. We will deeply miss our great leader and statesman.
