Drink of the week Smithwick’s Irish Ale

Smithwick’s has made quite an impression at Hoboken’s Green Rock Tap & Grill. The Irish import has only been available in the U.S. market since St. Patrick’s Day.

What is it? A dark, heavy Irish ale brewed by the folks at Guinness. And by the way, it’s pronounced “Smiddick’s.”

How it goes down: Very smooth, with a nice aftertaste. Heavier than the light beers that tend to be popular in Hoboken, but it has established a following among beer connoisseurs. Known to initiate conversations about its mother country of Ireland.

Cost: $4 a pint at the Green Rock Tap & Grill, 70 Hudson St. in Hoboken.

Who’s drinking it: As one of the few Hoboken establishments to offer Smithwick’s on tap, Green Rock has seen patrons come to the bar just for a taste of the Irish ale. Smithwick’s has found a niche among men, but women have been ordering this drink as well.
