Mayor Stack must be realistic on how much development UC can tolerate

Dear Editor:

I found it extremely ironic that a letter that recently appeared in your newspaper apparently written by the current mayor of our community stated his vociferous opposition to the construction of a 14-story high rise in neighboring Hoboken that would apparently eliminate the view from the Palisades for many residents of downtown Union City.

While I sincerely applaud his efforts, what about the current proposal that is currently under consideration before the Union City Zoning Board that could result in a 15-story 100 unit high rise being constructed on the 800 block of 22nd St.?

Such a colossal undertaking would make an extremely difficult parking situation on the neglected west side of Union City that much more unbearable and would just make one of the most congested areas of Union City that much more overcrowded. In addition at various times of the day, sunlight would be blocked out in the area closest to the high rise. Obviously I feel that just about anyone in our community would have to agree that such a building would indeed stick out like a sore thumb in our neighborhood.

Many of us realize that the current administration in Union City is apparently willing to allow just about any construction proposal to be given consideration in the name of viable tax ratables; however, they must realize that there has to be realistic limits as to how much development can be tolerated in such a compacted area without posing a serious risk to the well being of everyone in our city.
