A note from the previous editor of the Current:
I was in Hoboken Saturday night and picked up the Current. Good stuff. It looks like the covers are coming out nicely.
I miss the wonderful artists and entertainers in Hudson County. I’m very happy to see the Current is in good hands. Thank you to everybody who bought me a drink or made me laugh while I worked in Hoboken. – Eugene Mulero, Perth Amboy
Radio days
Tom Mix and Digger O’Dell were back on May 15 at Havana Bay Coffee in North Bergen as old-time radio expert Tommy Riggs put together a nostalgic radio history/trivia session in the first hour and the Radioland Theatre Players put on a great show in the second half. Catherine Baldwin turned in a finer performance than Agnes Morehead did in the original version of Sorry, Wrong Number. The large mixed audience was more than appreciative and all stayed glued to their seats right up to the thrilling radio climax.
Dick Kennedy of Short Hills won a $50 gift certificate to Renato’s Restaurant for getting nine out of the 14 trivia questions right, but nobody (except Ross London of the Radioland Players) knew that John Bickerson was played by Don Ameche, whose brother Alan scored the touchdown that gave the Colts an overtime victory over the Giants in the championship game that brought NFL football to the top as a pro sport.
This program served as a kick-off event in an attempt to form a community radio station here in Hudsontown that will feature nostalgia radio along with local news, notices, and cultural events live. The idea will be to provide something for everyone in the county on an FM radio station that would be available for public service announcements in the event of an
emergency. The nonprofit project hopes be broadcasting by the fall of this year. You can find about making a tax-deductible contribution by calling the station at (201) 420-1000. – John DiMatteo, community radio board member, Jersey City
