Jersey City native Cliff Perkins of Soul Generation says, “It’s always great to perform at home, especially when people are calling you out by your name.” Tickets are $39-$49. New York has SoHo and Hudson County has NoHu. Weehawken artist Ben Goldman coined the term NoHu to draw attention to the North Hudson art scene, which he compares to SoHo in the 1960s. Eight of the area’s top artists are now exhibiting their work in NoHu Visions 2004 in the Salon Gallery at the Park Performing Arts Center in Union City. The show remains on view through May 28, although the gallery is open to the public only during theater performances or by appointment. Another way to see the exhibit is to attend the Park PAC’s second annual Park Arts Celebration, which takes place Wednesday, May 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets for the benefit – which will feature live music, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres – are $125.

Artists participating in the show include: Goldman, Union City’s Arturo Arboleda and Steven Peabody, Cliffside Park’s Yuriko Hirose, North Bergen’s Chris Nowlan, West New York-based artists Jesus Rivera and Jesus Selgas, and Weehawken’s France Garrido. MUSHROOM Gallery, a Hoboken art space, is holding an opening reception for its show Documentary Others this Saturday, May 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. The show features the work of three emerging artists, each focusing on the idea of documentary perceptions. Mira Friedlaender is showing the video piece Many Pockets, which explores the relationship between the camera, the viewer, the artist, and the subject. Grotto, a video installation by Joshua Thorson, tells six different stories of family angst. Heeseop Yoon exhibits pieces made from masking tape and paint. Documentary Others will remain on view through June 6. The gallery is open Friday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. and by appointment. The nonprofit New Jersey Dramatists group stages a performance benefit this Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23, at the Victory Hall Cultural Center in Jersey City. The show, Shadows & Light: Shades of New Jersey Dramatists, features new one-act plays written by members of the group and directed and performed by the Waterfront Ensemble, its professional company of actors and directors. Proceeds will go toward updates to the theater, including new lighting equipment. The program includes Goose Vows by Pete Ernst, Tomato Season by Jewel Seehaus-Fisher, Between a Princess and a Witch by Luigi Jannuzzi, Newlyweds and Still by Kerri Kochanski, and The Elephant by Henry Meyerson. Local singer-songwriter John Taglieri will appear at the 2004 Man of the Year fund-raiser next Thursday, May 27, at The Madison Bar & Grill in Hoboken. The event – which benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society – will offer open bar, appetizers, a raffle, and performances by Taglieri and Matt Mead. The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy offers two walking tours this weekend. The first, a Warehouse District Walking Tour, takes place on Saturday, May 22, from noon to 2 p.m. Meet at street level at the Grove Street PATH Station for a walk around the landmarks of this old industrial area, including the 1906 Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse. On the Waterfront wasn’t the only film shot in Hoboken. This Friday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m., the Hoboken Historical Museum presents Hoboken on Film, a screening of excerpts from films shot in the Mile-Square City. Among the movies are: The Age of Innocence, Crossing Delancey, Sydney Pollack’s Three Days of the Condor, and Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise. Admission is $7, or $5 for museum members. The Hoboken Historical Museum is also offering On the Waterfront Walking Tours this Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23, at 1 p.m. Enjoy a guided tour of Hoboken locations where the classic 1954 film was shot.
