The artistic collective group of women, _gaia (the underscore is part of the name), based in Hoboken, will host a night of short films on March 5 to raise funds for “V-Day” Hoboken set for March 21 at Maxwell’s on Washington Street.V-Day is a worldwide campaign held to raise awareness and prevent violence against women and young girls.
The film night will showcase the shorts of new filmmakers from around Hudson County. The films picked will bring light to issues such as violence against women, according to Lillian Rubiero, _gaia’s co-founder.
“This will be a fascinating event to raise awareness and funds for V-Day,” Rubiero said.
The films include a documentary focusing on the lack of water in South Africa and what effect that has on the women in that surrounding area. There is also an experimental film utilizing garbage and a melodrama about suicidal lovers. The films are different in theme and genre, but all are interesting and bring up important issues affecting society, and women in particular.
There will be two screenings on March 5: one at 8 p.m. and another at 9:45 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. The performance will take place at _gaia’s studio in Hoboken at the Neumann Leather Building, 66 Willow Ave., on the third floor. For information visit www.gaiastudio.org. Space is limited for film night; to make reservations e-mail Liz Zimmerman at LoungeLizardDesigns@hotmail.com, include names and time preference.
All proceeds from the film night will benefit V-Day Hoboken.
Every year, events such as performances of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, are staged around the world to raise money for organizations devoted to stopping the violence. This year, V-day Hoboken will take place on March 21 at Maxwell’s in Hoboken. Proceeds from the event will benefit Women Rising, an organization helping women in Hudson County.
