Dear Editor:
On Saturday, February 7, I attended a meeting held by concerned citizens of Jersey City in reference to the unoccupied space in “The Old Reservoir” which is between Jefferson Avenue and Pershing Plaza and runs along both Central Avenue and Summit Avenue. At this meeting some people voiced their opinion as to what should be done with the property. Also brought up at this meeting were the concerns about a proposed Stop & Shop Supermarket, which will be built on land south of the reservoir.
On Monday, February 9th, I attended the Jimmy King Civic Association meeting. At this meeting representatives from Stop & Shop spoke about plans for this proposed supermarket and shared information with the over 300 people in attendance. At one point it was brought up to those in attendance that the Stop & Shop property at Central Avenue and Manhattan Avenue is under a 25 year lease agreement and would be willing in assisting that this property be used appropriately.
A suggestion! If the Stop & Shop ownership is committed to improving our residential and commercial communities why not turn over this property to the City of Jersey City and give back to the residents. In turn the City of Jersey City can turn this property into a modernized/efficient North District which all will benefit from. A police station on this site gives our prime-shopping district the needed security and maintains being centrally located to meet the needs of our residents. If we as residents should have to make concessions, then so should Stop & Shop.
