Get your skates out. The city plans to install a temporary ice rink on the city’s Little League Field near the corner of River Terrace and Fifth Street.
In the past, those looking to go ice skating had to go into Manhattan or out to the New Jersey suburbs, but not any more. The rink is scheduled to officially open on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.
"For the first time, Hoboken residents will have the opportunity to go ice skating this winter without having to leave town," said Mayor David Roberts. "This is an exciting amenity to offer residents and it will be utilized by individuals of all ages."
The city has contracted with Magic Ice USA of Florida to install and maintain the portable ice rink on the ball field from Dec. 24 until the end of February, 2004. The rink will free to the public, but there will be a small charge for skate rentals.
The Little League site was chosen for its level surface, field lighting, and proximity to the Field House, which contains a concession stand and bathroom facilities, Mayor Roberts said. The project is funded at no cost to taxpayers through a dedicated recreation account funded with real estate developer contributions.
According to city officials, the rink will be open seven days a week, and while the city has not finalized the hours of operation, there will be afternoon and evening hours. For more information, call (201) 420-2222.
