Union City celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Dear Editor:

Throughout the month of October, millions of people participated in activities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

This month was set aside each year to promote the rich culture and traditions of our Hispanic citizens and neighbors, who hail from many different countries from around the world. Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the United States and contribute much to our society, not just in Hudson County, but throughout the State and nation.

Here in Union City, where multi-Hispanic culture flourishes, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage every month of the year. We raise the flags of the countries from which our residents emigrated as a gesture of respect and friendship and to send the message that all are welcome here and that our community, and our municipal government, wants to include everyone.

History shows us that in times of national crises, many times it has been our friends from the Hispanic countries who have assisted and supported the United States.

So, let us all celebrate Hispanic Heritage, let us all open our minds and learn about and enjoy other cultures, and let us all appreciate not only our cultural differences but also our similarities. We have so much to learn from each other.

Sincerely,
Brian P. Stack
Mayor
