Dear Editor:
“Safety is a major concern during the Halloween holiday,” said William Visser, manager of Public and Governmental Services at AAA North Jersey, “however, Halloween can be a safe holiday when motorists, parents and trick or treaters work together.”
Halloween can be one of the most exciting times of the year for children; it can also be one of the most dangerous. “Many youngsters have their thoughts on having fun going door to door in search of treats and forget the important pedestrian safety rules they have been taught,” noted Visser.
The AAA manager offered some suggestions for parents, children and motorists to ensure a safe fun-filled Halloween. He stressed that Halloween can be especially dangerous because of the large number of children on the streets during the dusk and evening hours. Motorists should watch for children who may run out from between parked cars and suggests driving below the posted speed limit in areas where children are likely to be going house-to-house. Parents can play an active role in the preparation for Halloween by discussing basic traffic safety rules with their children. “One basic rule is for parents to assist children in choosing a costume that is light in color and trimmed with retro-reflective tape or stickers so that the child can be easily seen by motorists,” said Visser.
Many parents realize the safety concerns that exist on Halloween and work with their children in finding alternative methods to celebrate. Local mall events, parties and festivals are a good alternative to traditional Halloween activities. AAA North Jersey recommends a few safety tips to those who trick-or-treat in the community.
Use make-up instead of masks; travel only in neighborhoods you are familiar with; wear light color costumes and wear reflective tape and glow-in-the-dark accessories (even better go out during daylight hours); adults should accompany children on their trick-or-treat rounds; cross streets carefully at the corner and never between parked cars.
AAA North Jersey would like everyone to have a safe and Happy Halloween.
