Dear Editor:
The letter signed by Michele Holmes last week attacking Michael Lenz was long on hostility and short on facts. One specific charge she did make — three times — is that Michael “has a long history of criticism without solution.” This charge is just not true.
For over a decade, Michael Lenz has been a strong and effective critic of governmental waste, cronyism and corruption. But on every issue he has addressed he has been specific about the challenges we face and how he would face them. That could have been the reason why David Roberts asked him to manage his successful Mayoral Campaign in 2001 and had him write the original draft of the Hoboken United platform.
Michael broke with David Roberts when David broke with the platform that got him elected. Michael accepted a job with the City a year later, when David assured him he was finally prepared to keep those promises and run the City in a businesslike manner. Michael brought competence and professionalism to the job of Chief Financial Officer for almost a year until he was terminated (without a stated reason) not fired for cause, as Michele’s letter hints.
Why would Michele Holmes, who has no record of offering solutions herself, attack someone who does?
Michele, you shouldn’t be attacking Michael Lenz, you should be thanking him, as I did. Without him and others like him, this administration would sell us all out, and no one would be the wiser.
