For more than two decades, artists, crafters, painters, photographers, artisans, and sculptors have opened their doors and welcomed the public into their sacred work place as part of Hoboken’s Artist Studio Tour. Scheduled for Oct. 19, the tour is a diverse look at the culture and recent history of the town.
"This wonderful, free, citywide walking tour has grown over the years to become one of the community’s most popular cultural events," said Geri Fallo, the city’s coordinator of cultural affairs.
From the shores of international waters to the metropolitan area, people will find art of all origins. They will be able to stop, look and listen to poetry, dance, and music while strolling the self-guided tour, which includes more than 30 locations.
One of this year’s highlights is the work of Frank Hanavan, an impressionist painter who has depicted hundreds of Hoboken images. His work will be exhibited at the Hoboken Historical Museum during the tour. Also, the artists at 720 Monroe St. will invite people in for a day of interactive arts. Aliza Augistine, William Baez, David Martin, Laura Alexander, Thomas Egan, Mac Hartshorn, Janet Cuniffe, Nancy Green, Sissi Siska, Mark Davids, and Joe Borzotta are a few of the artists from 720 Monroe St., which also has an independent tour the first Sunday of each month.
Cunniffe will paint a portrait from a model at her studio during the tour. The crew at the Monroe Street Movement Space will present a choreographed dance for people.
To relax from all the walking, merchants like the Frozen Monkey Café, East L.A., The Goldhawk, and the Madison Bar and Grill will showcase artists’ works on their walls.
There will be a major exhibition with more than 15 artists at City Hall on Washington Street. The majority of the people will be painters and photographers.
"There’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to bring your checkbook. Most of the art will be for sale," Fallo said.
The Hoboken Studio Tour will be held Oct. 19 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tour maps will be available on the day of the tour at City Hall at 94 Washington St. For directions or general information call (201) 420-2207 or visit www.hobokennj.org. q
