First,
New Jersey City University dropped its football program. Now, the school is
leaving the New Jersey Athletic Conference. It’s amazing how the times have
changed.
According to a published report, NJCU is breaking its ties with the NJAC after nearly 50 years because of an apparent “inability to compete,” particularly with the school’s women’s teams.
The NJAC is considered one of the finest NCAA Division III conferences in the nation. NJCU is the first NJAC school to seek asylum from the league since it was founded in 1957.
Reportedly, NJCU will apply for admittance into the Skyline Conference, which features schools like Stevens Tech, as well as other institutions geared towards academics more than athletics.
Instead of trying to improve its teams and compete at the level it was designed to do, it appears as if NJCU is going the easy route and dropping down.
Whether that will be a good move remains to be seen, but it seems more like a copout than a plea for help…
North Bergen standout sprinter Kevin Thompson isn’t taking the summer off. The talented runner, who will be a junior in the fall, recently won the gold medal in the 200-meter dash and earned a silver medal in the 100-meters at the Region II Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships at Richard Stockton College in Pomona.
Competing in the Young Men’s Division, Thompson won the 200 in 22.09 seconds, and clocked 10.99 in the 100.
Thompson qualified to participate in the National Junior Olympic championships, which will be held in Miami, during the weekend of August 1-3. Thompson will compete in both events at the national championships…
Thirteen years ago, Hoboken High School was a step ahead of its time when it was the first area school to install an artificial turf surface at JFK Stadium.
Now, the surface is in dire need of a facelift, so it is currently being replaced by the state-of-the-art FieldTurf surface that is popping up everywhere, including Giants Stadium and also at Bruins Stadium in North Bergen.
Hoboken’s Board of Education received $775,000 in funding from the state Department of Education, as an Abbott district, in order to replace the current surface.
It is supposed to be finished by the time the Hoboken Red Wings take the field for practice next month…
Former Hudson Catholic and Montclair State standout Brian Ellerson, who is currently playing in the Montreal Expos’ organization, was promoted recently from the Florida State League to the Savannah Sand Gnats – you have to love those team’s nicknames – of the South Atlantic (Class A) League.
In 19 games with the Sand Gnats, Ellerson is hitting .254 with two homers and eight RBI and is finally playing regularly after missing most of last season with a back injury… — Jim Hague
