Beating the heat Local residents cool off

After a winter that left most people in the area seriously contemplating a move, and a June that was as wet as a rainforest, summer has arrived in all its glory. And with that comes the inevitable hot weather, the kind that makes New York City newspapers proclaim “Baked Apple” in their headlines.

Recently, The Reporter quizzed local residents on their techniques to stay cool. Here are the results.

“Mostly I drink a lot of water. And stay out of the sun, if possible. Basically, it’s important to keep hydrated and don’t push yourself in the heat.” – Waldo Marrero, West New York, with his dog Charlie

“If I can, I take the kids to the pool or to the beach. They love the water.” – Nora Viacorte, West New York, whose son Jose, 4, is pictured.

“I drink a lot of water and Gatorade that I keep in my emergency bag on the bicycle. The shorts always help, too.” – West New York Police Officer Maria Rivera

“I stay in the shade, under a tree if it’s available. I try to stay in the house in the air conditioning and drink a lot of water.” – Steven Hernandez, Union City

“I stay home! Nah, just kidding. I eat a lot of $.25 Icees and try to stay out of the sun.” – Adrianna Soto, Union City, and her son Anthony, 1.

“Well, I try to stay home in the air conditioning, but if I go outside, I drink a lot of water and Gatorade.” – Evans Velasquez, Union City
