We’re committed to restoring the Clam Broth House ‘finger- pointing sign’ ASAP

Dear Editor:

As we all know, a structural defect has forced the evacuation of 38-44 Newark Street, including the building housing the historic Clam Broth House. This building, especially the famous finger-pointing sign, symbolizes Hoboken to many people.

As it is situated in an historic district, the building’s facade as well as the sign must be restored to its original condition as quickly as possible. For years I have had a strong commitment to historic preservation as it is a crucial link to our past. The Clam Broth House sign is one icon which must be restored.

I strongly suggest the Historic Preservation Commission provide the resources necessary to ensure that this historic symbol is re-attached to the building as soon as the facade replacement is completed.

My administration is committed to doing all it can to see that this happens, and happens quickly.

Mayor David Roberts
