Hip-hop dancing Frazier making moves at Hoboken High

Hoboken High School junior Shakera Frazier has a passion for dancing.

When she entered high school, she performed at several stage and choir ensembles. Hip-hop was her specialty and she decided to start a modern dance troupe since the school did not offer one. She called the group Final Attraction, and they practice after school on their own time. Even though they are not an official school club, they are supervised while on the premises.

"The group shows the very positive side of hip-hop. It’s modern dance and keeps us active," Frazier said last week.

At a rehearsal at the high school’s auditorium, Final Attraction danced to the song "Gossip Folks" by Missy Elliott. Their energy and choreography was right out of a teen-pop music video. Led by Frazier, her peers jumped to the beats and sang along at some parts.

Frazier lives on Harrison Street in Hoboken. From an early age she was dancing around the house and listening to dance songs, according to her mother Brenda.

"She’s been a leader and easy to get along with," Brenda Frazier said.

Her troupe performs at school sporting events, and they are preparing for the talent show in April.

"I choreograph all our moves and select our music," she said.

She is looking into scholarship opportunities at performing arts schools and to recruit more members for the group. The current members are Frazier’s younger brother Anthony Frazier, Julio McDonald, Avion Johnson, Desiray Evans, Kiara Sharpe, Nicole Moya, Allison Pacheco, Jocelyn DeJesus, and Cassandra Rodriguez.
